Kingsbury Green Academy. That is the name we have chosen for the new school to serve Calne and the surrounding villages from September 2019 and we couldn't be more excited!
As you may be aware, we consulted the community, students and staff in order that we find a name that best captures the essence of what we aspire to achieve for the young people of this wonderful part of the world. I will be honest and admit that going in to this consultation period, I had my own ideas on what the name of the school should be but as soon as I saw 'Kingsbury Green Academy', I knew it was special.
What pleases me most is that the name was suggested independently by both students and one of our teachers. Both had conducted some research in to the history of education in Calne and had found that the original site of the grammar school was on the Green in the centre of town. The Green is well known for its importance to both education commerce. What we didn't know however, was that it was originally known as Kingsbury Green, and if you know Calne well, you will know that Kingsbury street still runs up to the Green to this day.
We wanted a name that acknowledged our rich heritage, yet one that is completely new. We feel that Kingsbury Green Academy has its roots firmly in the fabric of Calne whilst also being a name that we can all be proud to represent as we move forwards into an exciting future as part of a family of schools in the Royal Wootton Bassett Academy Trust. I know of no other school in Wiltshire being as proactive and innovative in ensuring the best opportunities for all their children.
Thank you for your ongoing support and watch this space as we reveal more information about this exciting journey.
