The English department at The John Bentley School is driven by our team of specialists who have a passion for their respective degrees in Literature and Language. We are a forward thinking team who focus their energy on creating exciting and well rounded lessons to nurture our students’ desire to learn. We plan our units of study around celebrated classical and modern literature to provide a breadth of study across genres and time periods and complement this with our studies of language. This in turn creates well rounded individuals who can think analytically and empathetically, building them up for further studies at each key stage. We are also dedicated to implementing our learners with the literacy requirements that will allow them to thrive across all aspects of curriculum.
The English curriculum for our KS3 students draws upon both classical texts and up to date modern literature. We cover a range of drama, poetry and prose texts throughout the three years including Shakespeare, Gothic Literature and the ever popular Hunger Games. As we try to foster a love for Literature through excellent fiction, we also build our students skills in non-fiction writing which is an aspect they will use in their future lives and careers. Each year we assess reading, writing and speaking and listening throughout our six units providing feedback in the middle of the units to allow time for development and growth in all skills.
